About Our High School Program

high-school-program-laco

Our rigorous, inspiring high school program will prepare your student to thrive in the 21st century. Your student will experience a unique mix of leadership training, liberal arts studies, and technology immersion that will help them think independently and live intentionally.

Mentors will challenge your student to engage with original thinkers in each subject, including history’s best leaders, philosophers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and artists. Your student will unlock energy and creativity they never knew they had—and get an education to match their potential.

We offer two types of online courses

Group (1)-1

Live Courses

In our live courses, students meet and interact with classmates and mentors in online classrooms.

Group (2)

Self-Paced Courses

In our non-live Self-Paced courses, your family will have greater flexibility of time throughout the week.

Note: All live classes are recorded, so if a student has to miss a class they can go back and watch it.

Classic and Honors Courses

We offer Classic and Honors versions in many of our courses.  Students in Classic and Honors courses meet in the same live class sessions but Honors students complete roughly 30% more work. You can select either the Classic or Honors version when you register for courses in Student Information Services (SIS).

Recommended Course Paths & Live Online Course Schedules by Grade

At Leadership Academy of Colorado (LACO), parents get to choose the days/times and format of courses for which their children register. Review the course paths and schedules below to create your student’s list of preferred classes. Here are a few key things to consider:

  • All live online classes are 50 minutes long
  • Fridays are for individual study and mentor office hours. Students should plan on studying several hours most Fridays
  • Course mentors and class times are subject to change, depending on enrollment
  • LACO follows Daylight Savings Time
  • We offer two high school diploma options, a diploma in 4 years and a diploma in 3 years. We adhere to the graduation guidelines outlined by the state of Colorado. Senior students must either complete the LACO Senior Capstone Project or achieve minimum ACT or SAT scores as required by the Colorado Department of Education.
  • We offer some courses in the summer, including Study Skills. See our new website for details.

See Course Selection Guidelines at the bottom of the page for more tips.

Independent Courses

We offer independent courses so students can earn academic credit for educational activities from a third-party vendor. Some students put in long hours practicing musical instruments, competing on an athletic team, or participating in internships. Students can earn credit for these and other activities by enrolling in an Independent Studies course, provided they fulfill the course requirements.

  • Students earn credit for things they are already doing and enjoy
  • Get access to a mentor while working independently to complete education hours

Course Selection Guidelines

  • High school students must enroll in at least four courses (2 of them being core). They may take up to 8 classes per semester.
  • For high school courses, the listed grades are recommendations only. High school classes are not grade-specific, and students may choose which classes to take.
  • For the most engaging school experience, LACO recommends students registered in online-only courses take a minimum of 2 live courses per semester.
  • Most live online courses are offered at multiple days/times. Select the sections that work best for your student.
  • Live Social Studies, Literature, Writing & Rhetoric, High School Math, and Pre-Calculus courses are offered in Classic and Honors versions. Students have 28 calendar days from the first day of the semester to move from the Classic version of a course to Honors and vice versa.
  • All live online classes include an “A” semester offered in Fall, and a “B” semester offered in Winter, unless specifically designated otherwise as follows: (F) = Class held Fall Semester only; (W) = Class held Winter Semester only
  • If your student is advanced in math or writing, you may enroll them in a more advanced course. If they have already earned accredited high school credit for a recommended course, they should work with an academic counselor to decide which course to take instead.
  • Many online high school courses are offered in both “live” and “self-paced” formats. However, most Fine Arts, PE, and Electives are offered exclusively in the self-paced format.
  • Students may choose from live online, self-paced, and/or independent courses. Independent Studies courses are upon approval as they must meet state requirements. Please contact a school counselor if you have any questions.
